The 20-minute bedtime routine that works
Four steps, same order, every night. The predictability does more than any gadget.
Why routine beats timing
Babies cannot read a clock, but they can read a sequence. A repeated four-step routine becomes a physiological cue: the same order every night tells the body that sleep is next.
Keep it to 15-25 minutes. Longer routines tend to become a negotiation as your baby gets older.
The four steps
1. Feed (and burp). Finish at least 15 minutes before the crib so feeding and sleeping do not become one event.
2. Bath or warm wipe-down - the temperature drop afterwards is genuinely sleep-inducing.
3. Massage and pyjamas in the nursery with the lights already dimmed.
4. One book, one song, into the crib drowsy but awake.
The details that matter
Same room, same order, same low light. White noise at a consistent volume through the whole routine and into sleep helps mask the household noise that wakes light sleepers.
Room temperature around 20-22C (68-72F) and a dark room - blackout curtains are the highest-return purchase in baby sleep.
Same four steps, same order, every night. Predictability is the mechanism.
Guidance only, not medical advice. Every baby is different — adjust to your baby's cues and talk to your pediatrician about any sleep concern.
