Sleep associations and gentle self-settling
How your baby falls asleep at bedtime is how they will expect to fall back asleep at 2am.
The 2am test
Everyone surfaces briefly between sleep cycles. Adults roll over and go back down. A baby who fell asleep being rocked needs to be rocked again to get back down - that is the whole mechanism behind frequent night waking.
This is not a bad habit. It is simply a learned association, and associations can be changed gradually.
The gradual retreat
Pick one sleep (usually bedtime) and change only that one for a week. Put your baby down drowsy but awake, and stay next to the crib with a hand on their chest instead of picking them up.
Each night, move a little further away: hand on chest, then hand hovering, then sitting in the chair, then the doorway. Slow is fine - consistency matters more than speed.
What to keep
Keep the props that do not require you: white noise, a sleep sack, a dark room, a pacifier if it is already established. Those are portable and your baby can recreate them alone.
Drop the ones that need your body: rocking, feeding to sleep, the stroller, the car.
Change one sleep at a time, and only remove props that need you to run them.
Guidance only, not medical advice. Every baby is different — adjust to your baby's cues and talk to your pediatrician about any sleep concern.
